License and International Driving Permit (IDP) rules

A car-only IDP does not count. IDPs are recognized under the 1949 Geneva Road Traffic Convention and are issued by your home country’s motoring authority (AA, AAA, ADAC, RAC, and similar) before you travel — Thailand does not issue them to visitors. One exception: tourists holding a national driving license from an ASEAN country, including Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, can ride without an IDP.
